KCAP Architects&Planners, Royal HaskoningDHV and project initiator Emergo have presented plans for a floating park in Rotterdam’s Rijnhaven.
Rotterdam is not alone in the dilemma of what to do with redundant inner city docks, striking the balance between satisfying the never ending demand for more space while also preserving the docks heritage and providing an element of outdoor leisure experience.
The Kop van Zuid area around the Rijnhaven is currently being redeveloped and the floating island plan involves enhancing the living and working conditions of the inner city. The classical shaped round island will be 185m diameter encircling a lower lying inner space and is described as “impossible to topple over”. The island will contain 15,000m2 of green areas, 30,000m2 of parking space and 17,000m2 of leisure facilities.
The floating park will be buildable within five years entirely with private financing and able to be relocated if necessary.
