Harbour Construction Keeps Terramare Busy

The scope of the work is to execute a 100m long berth including the access bridges.

Terramare says the main support structures are steel piles covered with a concrete deck. Work on the project stated in May and is due to be completed in June 2003.

The second project that the company is working on is the extension of the existing harbour in Tornio, Finland which is the northernmost harbour in the Gulf of Bothnia. The client is Avesta Polarit Stainless which is one of the biggest stainless steel producers in the world.

The scope of the work here includes construction of a 300m long quaywall, plus associated dredging works for the harbour basin and the reclamation of new land. Terramare says the quaywall is being built from heavy concrete elements (‘L’ shapes and wall elements) weighing some 200 tonnes each which will are being installed using a floating crane.

Work was due to start on this project in September and be completed in October 2003.

In the meantime, Terramare’s parent organisation Boskalis is also at work in Scandinavia, having been awarded a major dredging project at the Port of Gothenburg for deepen and widen the channel at Gothenburg. Several different dredgers will be utilised for the project, including trailing suction hopper dredgers, drilling barges for underwater drilling and blasting work, and a backhoe, which will remove the overburden.

The entire project should be complete in the first half of 2004.
