The pan-European cargo and logistics project part funded by the EU, iCargo, has formally launched a three year programme designed to improve the performance of global logistics.
The project, titled Intelligent Cargo in Efficient and Sustainable Global Logistics Operations, builds upon the success of previous frameworks Freightwise and e-Freight.
iCargo aims to promote collaborative and sustainable supply chains helping the consortium of 29 European organisations involved to share information easily and cooperate better.
It will also develop intelligent cargo centric solutions to address scheduling, routing and security issues.
The overall aim is to enable logistics to become more cost effective and more environmentally friendly, mainly by reducing the number of freight vehicles on the roads.
But it is more than just a research project. David Quesada, co-ordinator of iCargo explained: “By ensuring extensive dissemination of research results, demonstration and pilot cases, validation activities, the results of iCargo will be transferred to the international transport logistics community immediately after the project.”
He added: “This will ensure that the value generated by iCargo can be adopted and utilised in the commercial cargo and logistics domain.”
