Icelandic AUVs for NCS Survey
NCS Survey, also of Aberdeen, has acquired two Gavia type AUVs from designers Hafmynd of Reykjavik in Iceland under a contract worth some $1m. Both swath bathymetry configured systems include GeoSwath sonars and other sensors and have a depth rating of between 200m and 1,000m.
Average endurance is dependant on speed but can typically be four hours at 4 knots per rechargeable battery.
NCS Survey’s chief executive Andy Gray says the first venture for at least one of the systems will be shallow water pipeline surveys in the Caspian this month.
According to Hafmynd, which has also developed a portable low cost offshore variant of the system, other current Gavia customers include the University of Iceland, the Danish and US navies, the Canadian Research Council and the University of British Columbia.
