H&W wins largest ever contract

The firm will fabricate ground anchor and A-space frames for an unnamed mining company in Greenland.

The full scope of the work includes four ground anchor frames and four A-space frames, along with other steel components, which will be used to make up part of the barge mooring system at the company’s mine in Greenland. It will allow the barges to moor at the quayside.

“We are delighted we have been trusted to deliver critical components for this mining infrastructure project,” said CEO John Wood. ”This is Arnish yard’s first export project within the mining sector.”

Arnish is a recently acquired shipyard on the west coast of Scotland, which makes exporting products and materials to Greenland more logistically convenient.

“Harland & Wolff has now delivered components in the nuclear, renewables, marine and oil and gas sectors in 2022 alone.”

The firm operates in five markets within the maritime and offshore industry; namely commercial, cruise and ferry, defence, energy and renewables. 

Its Belfast yard is one of the largest heavy engineering facilities in Europe, with deep water access, two large dry docks and vast fabrication halls.

It has its fingers in many pies: it also owns the Northern Ireland Islandmagee salt cavern gas storage project, which is predicted to store 25% of the UK’s natural gas capacity when operational.
