MARIN Tanks Up for 70th Anniversary

Already fully operational before this month, the new research facility gives MARIN improved operational performance, providing greater flexibility, improved cavitation operations and a broader application.

Damen Shipyards was the DTT’s first customer, conducting experiments to investigate the cavitation behaviour of a 65m research vessel for the Irish Marine Institute. Cavitation observations and determination of the cavitation inception diagram for a new propeller design were conducted behind the ship model. Cavitation observations were made for the trawling condition at low speed, for survey condition, and for free running condition at maximum engine power. Radiated noise measurements were also made.

This initial use of MARIN’s new facility helped to design a vessel with a propeller free of sheet and tip vortex cavitation at survey conditions. Low-noise requirements were also defined.
