Fascine mattress

A damaged spillway dam has been temporarily repaired with the use of fascine mattresses - an engineering speciality of the Netherlands.

The large woven mats are made of brushwood or twigs, and are placed in rivers to strengthen banks and coastal structures such as groynes, or on sea and river beds to protect from scour.
