Three cruise ship berths earmarked for shore power
Potentially one of the largest wharf power supply systems in Europe is to be built at Haropa Port in northwestern France.
A consortium of Vinci Energies and Vinci Construction subsidiaries will deliver a high-voltage power supply system for cruise ships that dock at three berths at the Pointe de Floride terminal at the port.
All three berths will be connected to a substation that in turn will be connected to the public grid to power and charge the ships’ batteries, with a purpose-designed mobile connection rig built to handle the port’s tidal range and cover the full length of the berths to power ships of any size.
The €25 million project will supply 11 kV to each berth and the first section, the Pierre Callet berth, will be handed over in spring 2025.

Shore power is on the increase as the drive to switch from using diesel while in port intensifies.
“It is set to become the standard in Europe by 2030 for compelling environmental reasons: it significantly reduces pollutant emissions as well as greenhouse gas emissions from vessels,” says Vinci.
The shore power system will be installed in part by Actemium, which is Vinci Energies’ industry brand and has 20 such references to its name around the world, it says.
Haropa Port is a multi-modal terminal at Ler Havre, a large port complex that accommodates a lot of tourism as well as trade.
“It will support growth in tourism and economic development while helping to fulfil environmental commitments,” says Vinci.
