Celebrated for its well-preserved wooden architecture, the town stands as a vivid reminder of the value of protecting local heritage. It also has a strong maritime identity – its sheltered natural bay hosts a busy port that plays a central role in the region’s fishing economy.

Commissioned by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, ShibataFenderTeam designed and delivered 42 Extruded Fenders (DD 300×300) with an impressive length of 4600 mm, intended for the large wharf that serves the bigger fishing vessels. Each fender features five countersunk drillings (Ø60/30 mm) and two end chamfers of approximately 30°.

The harbor is heavily exposed to strong winds and the shifting weather of the area. To provide reliable and safe vessel contact at all tide levels, our in-house engineering team designed the fenders over 4.5 meters in length. Stykkishólmur is also at the cutting edge of environmental policy and has been a frontrunner in environmental consciousness in Iceland so designing our solutions, good quality was essential to ensure a positive economic footprint in the long term.

This robust solution also presented structural challenges due to the open wood structure over which the DD fenders were installed. While extruded fenders are generally straightforward to install, the limited anchoring of the existing quay required careful planning for proper and seamless integration of the five drillings.
