Svitzer marlin: pilot boat to support LNG terminal operations in western Australia

Towage operator Svitzer recently took delivery of a new pilot boat from Western Australia-based boatbuilder Dongara Marine.

Designed by Southerly Designs, Svitzer Marlin is the first 17.2 metre Berkeley Class pilot vessel, a smaller variant of the already successful 19.2 metre Berkeley Class vessels.

Although smaller in dimensions than the previous 19.2 metre Berkeley Class vessels, Svitzer Marlin still provides capacity to carry six pilots in addition to launch master and deckhand.

With a total installed power of just over 900kW (1200hp), the new pilot boat achieved an average fully loaded maximum speed of just under 36 knots on trials and at 80 per cent power Svitzer Marlin cruised at 28 knots and used less than 6.5 litres of fuel per nautical mile

Svitzer Marlin was acquired to help fulfil a Svitzer has a 10-year contractual arrangement with Woodside to provide towage and pilot transfer services at the latter’s LNG export operations in the Port of Dampier in Western Australia, commencing at the end of 2023.
