More ship repair action at Oranjewerf

February was a quiet month due to ice but the company reports that some vessels which had sailed in frozen waters entered the yard with propeller damage and leakage. However, as many vessels could not sail due to the ice, larger repair jobs had to be postponed.

‘But that’s part of the game,’ calculator Tom Hol told MJ. ‘Over the last few years we didn’t have such strong winters so we were a little bit spoiled.’

‘Now that spring has dawned in The Netherlands, many construction companies are starting up again, which potentially means a lot of work for the Oranjewerf. Floating construction equipment like backhoe dredgers, pontoons and split barges frequently visit the Oranjewerf for Class renewal, in-hire surveys and preparations and repairs before undertaking new jobs.’

The offshore industry is also still a major market for the yard. The platform supply vessel REM Mermaid visited the yard to have one propulsion thruster exchanged. The job was done in only four days. An accurate preparation with the shipping company before and during the job was necessary to do the job in the available time.

Recently the cable laying pontoon Oceanteam Installer was docked for class renewal and repair after having been working in the UK. Some steelwork was completed along with an overhaul of the Z-drive thruster, cleaning, painting and some repair of the four point mooring winches.

The fishery inspection vessel Isis was also recently docked at the yard. Amongst other repair jobs to the vessel, the drinking water tanks were grit blasted and recoated.

At the end of last year the company celebrated its 60th anniversary, for which it published a book entitled ‘60 Year Shiprepair in Amsterdam-North’.
