Multi-purpose aluminium workboat

When a workboat builder from Finland decided to enter the leisure market with a new aluminium design they realised that the boat they had developed would also have potential in the workboat sector. So the new Modius 34 which will be introduced in the middle of 2015 will also be available in a workboat version.

The 34 is powered by a pair of 260 hp Yanmar diesel engines which are coupled to Yanmar/Mercury stern drives

Modius works with two other Finnish companies in developing their products. Weldmec is a specialist company that produces fabrications in both aluminium and steel and works mainly as a subcontractor using computer controlled cutting equipment. Serecraft is the workboat specialist, offering a range of pilot, patrol and general workboats all based on developed aluminium hulls.

The first boat in the Modius range will be this 10.85 metre long vessel based on a moderate vee hull with a raised wheelhouse extending forward into a raised coachroof. Being constructed of aluminium it is a simple operation to vary the length of this wheelhouse to suit various workboat applications and the same applies to the equipment fitted inside. The design of the Modius 34 has been developed by naval architects Strahlmann Yacht Design with the hull and superstructure produced by Weldmec.

The large aft cockpit is the working area and this can be used for carrying a tender or it can be fitted with a crane or lifting boom for carrying out underwater operations. There is a cargo hold below the deck and in front of the engine compartment. The Modius 34 has a payload of 2400 kg and the various options allow the boat to be used as a 12 person personnel carrier, a survey boat and for general harbour and workboat operations. Living accommodation can be incorporated into the forward section of the hull.

The 34 is powered by a pair of 260 hp Yanmar diesel engines which are coupled to Yanmar/Mercury stern drives giving a speed potential in the mid-30 knots range. Following the introduction of this 34, Modius is working on the designs for a 28 version. The development of these workboats demonstrates how the gap between the leisure and the workboat sector is narrowing with many leisure boats now having workboat origins.
