The MCA has embarked upon an industry wide consultation on the draft Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution by Sewage and Garbage from Ships) Regulations 2008 which will impose the new provisions of MARPOL Annex IV (Sewage) and Annex V (Garbage). Lorraine Weller explains the extent and expected effect of the provisions.Captain Richard Coates FNI, currently operations manager at the Humber Sea Terminal, was elected to a two year term as president of the Nautical Institute at the organisation's AGM in Antwerp last month. In his inaugural address he stressed the importance of the role of the NI and of increasing its influence through major growth of its international membership, while working ever harder to encourage the recruitment of younger members.
