New Fugro GNSS positioning service
Fugro in the Netherlands is to launch G2 on 1 February, a new satellite based precise positioning service combining data from both the US GPS constellation and the Russian Glonass network for what it says will be composite position solutions.
The service will use the Dutch company’s own network of dual system reference stations to calculate ‘orbit and clock’ errors on a satellite by satellite basis for all 50 satellites of the two networks and so provide consistent decimeter level accuracies on a worldwide basis.
Fugro claims that G2 is the first real-time, precise orbit and clock solution developed by a commercial company for the Glonass system and is also the very first combined orbit and clock GPS/Glonass solution from any real-time source. Its development and extensive laboratory and field testing follows close collaboration with the European Space Operation Centre (ESOC), a division of the European Space Agency. Meanwhile, Fugro says it expects to see widespread practical use of the G2 service in all sectors of its positioning operations covering not only offshore applications, but also those in coastal waters and on land.
