Substantial award for Van Oord in India
Dutch dredging major Van Oord has been awarded a contract for the deepening of a channel in Hazira, India. The contract value amounts to € 36m and the client is Essar Bulk Terminals Ltd, an Essar Steel company. The project got under way this month and is scheduled for completion in May 2010.
Hazira lies 310km north of India’s financial capital Mumbai. Van Oord will dredge a 4.5km long channel to a terminal. The material dredged from the channel will be used for reclaimation at two different locations. Van Oord will deploy two heavy cutter suction dredgers to execute the project in between the monsoons of 2009 – 2010.
The channel will contribute to the economic development of the area by facilitating the growth of steel industries and maritime transport of steel products.
