Plans laid out for Polish offshore wind farm
The third of three offshore wind farms in Poland has had requirements issued so it can take the next step.
Technical power grid connections for the Baltica 1 wind farm have been specified, including connection capacity, cost of developing transmission infrastructure and other planning requisites.
Baltica 1 is about 80km from the Polish coastal town of Łeba in Pomorskie province, and is actually the third site owned by PGE after the Baltica 3 and 2 sites, which are about to have seabed exploration work begun along with conceptual work on how to connect them to the onshore power grid.
In February 2020, a two-year wind measurements study was completed by PGE Baltica on the first two sites, Baltic 2 and 3, which will generate 2.5GW in total when commissioned by 2030, if all goes to plan.
“As an integral part of the national power system, PGE develops in the green direction and invests in renewable energy sources,” said Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of the Management Board of PGE. “Investments in offshore wind farms are of key importance for the energy transition as well as the economic transformation of our country.”
Poland does not have any offshore wind farms operating yet, however another site, Baltic Power, is preparing for installation works to begin at the end of this year.
Baltic Power will be among the first wind farms around the world to feature 15MW turbines and on completion in 2026 is projected to meet up to 3% of Poland’s electricity demand.
