Polish 1.4GW wind farms to begin installation

Installation will begin on Poland’s first two offshore wind farms this year, owners Equinor and Polenergia have confirmed.

The Baltyk II and Baltyk III projects should have a power generation capacity of 1,440MW and supply around two million households, the firms say.

By 2040, the plan is to have 18GW of offshore wind-generated capacity in Poland.

The service base at Łeba will be built on the site of a former shipyard and a remote control centre for the wind farms will of course be included in the construction.

A new quay for all the vessels required will also be needed for them to moor up at Łeba.

Development and engineering of the monopile foundations will be done for both wind farms by Danish firm Rambøll, an architecture, engineering and consulting company with experience in offshore wind farms.

“This is another milestone for our offshore wind projects, which are expected to supply renewable energy to the Polish power grid as early as 2027,” said Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk, Equinor country manager for Poland. “As one of the first developers in the Baltic Sea, our wind farms will significantly contribute to Poland’s energy security. We are pleased to be able to actively participate in our country’s energy transition.”

“The construction and commissioning of our wind farms in the Baltic Sea is fast approaching,” said Jerzy Zan, CEO of Polenergia. “The signed contract is further proof of the advancement of the projects we are developing together. Our offshore projects are some of the largest wind farms that are being built in this part of Europe.”

First power from the Bałtyk II and III wind farms could be delivered into the grid as early as 2027, and the commercial phase of their operation is planned from 2028.

The next phase of offshore wind power development in Poland from Equinor and Polenergia is the Bałtyk I offshore wind farm, with a capacity of up to 1560 MW, around 80 km from shore.
