Volvo Penta expands IMO III tech across D8 range
Volvo Penta has revealed a new, expanded range of D8 IMO III engines aimed at smaller, high-speed commercial vessels.
The company says it means a broader range of D8 propulsion packages have been enabled, all with the ability to exceed IMO III emissions standards ‘without compromising on power or efficiency’.
The new diesel six-cylinder, 7.7-litre engines can provide power of up to 405 kW, says Volvo Penta, and generate up to 550 horse power.
“As Emissions Control Areas expand, commercial vessels must comply with more stringent IMO III standards,” said Jan-Willem Vissers, director of Marine Commercial at Volvo Penta. “Historically, there weren’t any IMO III solutions for smaller high-speed vessels, so they were exempt from restrictions. Now they must comply, so we have leveraged our IMO III technology for an expanded range of D8 solutions.”

He says Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is intrinsic to the engines, developed across Volvo Penta for the new D8 range and optimised for heavy-duty marine operations.
Exhaust gases are combined with diesel exhaust and urea in the SCR unit, through the integrated urea injector pipe. Pre-installed in a urea daytank, urea quality and level sensors work together with a dosage pump to maintain the stringent IMO III emissions levels.
The SCR unit can be installed in either a vertical or horizontal position, thanks to a new seamlessly rotating outlet.
Volvo Penta is aiming its D8 IMO III range at pilot boats, CTVs, high-speed ferries, search and rescue boats, patrol and other smaller workboats.
It plans to bring the range to market in the first half of 2025.
