Extended Sidescan Sonar Range
US sidescan sonar exponents EdgeTech have extended their series of systems with development of the 4700-DFX, a dual-frequency unit capable of high resolution imagery at increased ranges and tow speeds.
The wreck, which according to Navy officials poses no hazard to shipping, lies at a depth of 1,130m just south of the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula.Designed for towed, AUV, ROV or UUV platforms and using dynamically focused transducers, the system provides high resolution imaging at a range of 250m/side at 300 kHz and 125m/side at 600 kHz. Operating in a multi-pulse mode at the 600 kHz frequency, it can be towed at speeds of 14 knots while maintaining 100% coverage.
Capable of high definition imagery of very small targets, it is an ideal tool for Mine Countermeasure (MCM) and other security type surveys. EdgeTech, have also introduced a comparable portable search and recovery model suitable for port and harbour applications, the 4125-P.
