Glasgow Harbour Surveys
Clydeside Survey reports successful completion of extensive bathymetric surveys of Glasgow Harbour over distances of around 2.5km and in waters where visibility was less than 20cm. Aside from the effects of deformation, a number of construction cracks and rungs of disused ladders were identified.
Formulae for sounding density both along and across track, it says, have been the subject of some debate since first publication, as they could be interpreted in two different ways, with resulting density being over-optimistic. The formulae have therefore been adjusted accordingly.
The surveys were carried out with a SeaBat 8125 multibeam echosounder together with an SVP70 sound velocity probe lately acquired from Reson Offshore in Aberdeen. Newly developed by the company’s parent organisation in Denmark, the SVP70 is designed for fixed mounting on surface ships as well as submarines, AUVs and ROVs.
With programmable output, it uses digital correlation techniques while a novel mechanical design with internal sensors is claimed to allow simpler integration with fewer disturbances from water flow. Yields of hydrodynamic drag and flow noise emissions are said to be particularly low.
