Internet based survey service
Fugro, the Dutch survey conglomerate operating worldwide in over 50 countries, has launched an internet based remote access service, Fugro’ s Advanced Navigation System (FANS). It enables remote connections to offshore survey systems, either from land based offices or other vessels within working areas, while facilitating quality controlled monitoring and stand alone navigation.
The company says the facility is an attractive solution for non-critical nearshore and offshore operations with a frequent, but non-permanent need for navigation support for jack-up work barges and rigs, tug boats and support and construction vessels. Comprising both hard and software, its infrastructure utilises onboard internet connections using either VSAT or similar communication systems. Encrypted software ensures secure connection between office and offshore operations and although the service necessitates permanent internet connection, data rates are comparatively small.
Improved QC benefits, fewer personnel transfers to or in offshore working areas and reduced logisitics are among the main advantages cited by Fugro for its latest service.
