New VT TSS Systems

Unveiled at OI 2004 were two new developments from VT TSS of Watford. The first, Marinus , is an attitude and heading reference system providing exceptional accuracy in extreme conditions for multibeam operations. Extending the companys existing range of motion sensors, it is claimed to provide heading, heave, roll and pitch correction data in sea dynamics otherwise beyond the capability of competing systems.

The EM 710 multibeam echo sounder is a high resolution seabed mapping system capable of meeting all relevant survey standards. The mounted system will be capable of seafloor mapping down to 2,000m and allows a choice of beam widths and transmission modes. The system can generate 800 soundings per ping with a frequency of 70-100 kHz.

Available as a stand-alone unit and simple to use, install and configure, it offers highly flexible horizontal or vertical mounting options whether used for pole-mounted sonar heads or ROV’s. The standard model is rated for 3,000m while a 6,000m version is also on offer for deeper projects. Both additionally feature Windows-based display and control software for interfacing as well as set-up for project integration.

The other new system, Meridian Subsea, is a low-maintenance gyrocompass depth-rated to 3,000m. Claimed to be the smallest, most flexible and accurate unit for commercial use, it is basically designed for AUV and ROV operators requiring a dependable source of accurate heading data. Unlike high element replacement costs associated with other mechanical gyros, says VT TSS, the only attention that Meridian Subsea will require is occasional calibration. A companion model, Meridian Subsea RP, includes a roll and pitch module producing data to an accuracy of 0.1º.
