US Charts on Demand
US company Ocean Grafix of Minnesota reports testing of a service that can provide instant paper charts using latest advances in digital print technology. It has begun tests at two locations in Louisiana in expectation of expanding the service if they are successful.
It will be the fifth such event to be held outside the UK following earlier stagings in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rotterdam and most recently, Kiel. The choice of Ireland, says The Society, is particularly timely as the national Geological Survey Division is currently engaged in mapping an offshore area ten times larger than the country itself.
While ships equipped with ECDIS can already receive instant updates in a variety of ways, the majority of them still use paper charts and finding a current one at short notice can be problematic.
OceanGrafix’s remote print service is being conducted in association with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to produce fully corrected and up-to-date US charts on water-resistant or laminated paper.
