40 knot monohull
What does it take to make a 63m monohull do 40 knots? According to naval architects Incat Crowther, the answer lies in five engines pumping out over 15,000bhp. The US office of the global firm of vessel designers has recently been commissioned by an undisclosed Central American operator to design this unique five-engined monohull ferry to expand their operation.
The vessel is powered by five MTU 16V400M63L engines producing 2240kw each, and equipped with ZF-7650 gearboxes powering five Hamilton HM-811 jets. We make that 15,225 bhp overall. Two 150ekW generator sets will provide the vessel with electricity and a 200hp bow thruster will allow for manoeuvrability and stationing. A service speed of 37 knots, with top speed of 40 knots and capacity for 650 passengers will provide efficient transportation.
The designers say that the vessel is another example of Incat Crowther’s diverse product offering, and their ability to design an efficient vessel customised to an operator’s needs.
