A Load Off the Road at Lowestoft
The ABP Port of Lowestoft has played an important role in relieving road traffic pollution by handling brewery plant equipment for local company Adnams. Nine stainless steel brewery tanks built in Germany and valued at some £ 1.5m were manufactured in Germany and shipped to Lowestoft on board RMS Scanlark for onward delivery to Adnams Sole Bay Brewery at Southwold in Sussex.
Beer has been brewed in Southwold since 1345, with Adnams’ founding brothers George and Ernst setting up their company in 1872. Adnams currently brews nine distinctive brands of beer which are distributed in their 83 pubs located across East Anglia. The company is concerned about the environmental impact of its activities and thus wanted its new tanks transported by sea as far as possible to alleviate road congestion and resulting CO
2
emissions. By utilising the Port of Lowestoft, only 12 of the tanks’ 370 mile journey from Germany were travelled by road.
Alastair MacFarlane, port manager for ABP East Anglia said, ‘As an occasional drinker of Adnams’ beer, I am especially glad that the Port of Lowestoft has facilitated this shipment for Adnams’ Sole Bay Brewery. The port was ideally situated to handle this shipment, which also highlights its ability to handle any conceivable type of cargo.’
