Alstom UK invests in tidal turbines

Alstom UK has signed an agreement with Rolls-Royce to acquire Tidal Generation Limited (TGL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Plc based in Bristol, which designs and manufacturers tidal stream turbines.

The 1MW tidal turbine will be installed for testing at the EMEC in Orkeney

In partnership with the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), TGL is currently in the process of developing the next generation 1MW tidal stream turbine. The turbine will be installed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, by the end of the year and will be tested in a number of operational conditions over a two year period. The project aims to collect and publish vital data in order to help further the tidal energy industry.

Steve Burgin, president of Alstom UK said, “With today’s acquisition, we’ve got an incredibly exciting opportunity to take a technology that’s right at the start of its deployment to commercial scale in the future.”

He added: “As a group we can now offer lower carbon solutions to meet all needs, from gas-fired power stations to a whole range of renewables, from offshore wind to marine to biomass, that not only help reduce emissions but also keep the UK’s power flowing.”

The acquisition of TGL is expected to be completed within the next few months.
