Antwerp car clean-up

This finding emerges from a survey carried out since stricter checks were introduced for second hand cars and any secondary goods placed in them. By ‘secondary goods’ is meant materials that do not belong to the car itself but that are shipped in or with it. In recent years it became increasingly clear that car dealers were using the vehicles as ‘packaging’ for materials that to all intents and purposes are illegal waste. The ‘Regulations for handling second hand vehicles in the port of Antwerp’ were introduced on 1 January 2012 with the aim of curbing such practices.

The regulations clearly define what can and cannot be shipped through the port. To ensure compliance the Port Authority has appointed additional inspectors, resulting in the amount of secondary goods falling 17% in the past six months.
