Basque energy revolution

The aim of the new ‘brand’ is to bring together companies and organisations within the region to consolidate their position as technology leaders and identify new opportunities.

Javier Zarraonandia, director for energy, mines and industrial administration, Basque Government, said: “The Basque Country is in a very good position to meet the challenges of this growing sector and compete on the worldwide energy market.”

Companies involved include members of the Energy Cluster Association, which brings together the leading firms in the energy sector value chain, Basque Maritime Forum, and organisation set up to promote and enhance the competitiveness of firms in the region, including La Naval shipyard, and Equipamientos Eólicos, a company that designs and manufactures lifts for erection and maintenance of wind turbines. Other companies involved include Asaken, Gamesa, Iberdrola, Ingeteam, Vicinay Marine, Tecnalia, BEOG and Ormazabal.

The Basque energy industry now has over 400 firms with a joint turnover of €15.5bn. More than 80 of those companies work in wind energy, offering high standards of specialisation and all-round services in complete value chains.
