BV classes world’s largest containership

The CGM Marco Polo measures 396m long and 54m wide and is equipped with the latest advanced environmental technology. The vessel is the first in a series of three 16,000 teu vessels being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea for French operator, CMA-CGM.

The containership is part of the new generation of larger ships which are challenging ports around the world to provide facilities to accommodate them.

The vessel features an electronically controlled engine allowing for significantly reduced consumption of fuel (-3%, on average) and of lub oil (-25 % on average) and an exhaust gas bypass system which improves efficiency and reduces fuel consumption by 1.5% at low speeds.

Its optimised hull design also significantly improves propulsion through the water, while a ballast water treatment system preserves environmental biodiversity by preventing the release of chemicals into the sea.

The other two vessels in the series are expected to be delivered in 2013.
