Cammell Laird targets renewables
UK based Merseyside shipyard and engineering business, Cammell Laird, is looking to grow its business across the marine, renewables and civil nuclear sectors in the second half of 2012, following a strong first six months of trading.
The company has undertaken more than 180 marine contracts for commercial clients and the UK Ministry of Defence between January and June 2012.
Managing director, Linton Roberts, said that so far this year, the company has consolidated its position in the marine sector completing contracts for more 40 clients. He said the work mainly focused on drydocking, repairs and maintenance for ferries, tugs, off shore support ships and tankers.
Cammell Laird chief executive, John Syvret, talked about the company’s ongoing improvements to its yard infrastructure in order to support its contract with RWE to service the construction of the Gwynt y Mor off shore windfarm – an area of business it hopes to grow.
Mr Syvret added: “This is our first significant contract in the off shore wind industry which holds considerable potential for us given our skill set, facilities and geographical position.”
In addition to focusing on growth areas though, the company has also completed extensive work in the first half of 2012 for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) – part of its 25-year through life support contract to maintain 11 ships in the fleet.
