Cat engines for pilot boats at Milford Haven
Finning UK & Ireland will provide Cat engines to a new generation of pilot boats at the port of Milford Haven.
Each boat will contain two Cat C18 engines which are capable of generating 670mhp.
The order also includes an extra C18 engine, to be used as a spare, and three pairs of C2.2 gensets that will provide 16 KVA of on-board power.
Mainstay Marine has also got an extended service covered contract. This is to provide support for 10,000 hours of engine use to cover approximately four years of operation.
In order for the port’s business to run smoothly, the pilot boats should run at peak condition, therefore it is crucial that Cat engines avoid downtime.
Designed to be used extensively in heavy weather, the vessels are capable of operating in swells up to 5m in wave height, and are expected to withstand 1,000 vessel impacts per year.
Pilot boats in Milford Haven can range from small cargo ships to some of the world’s largest oil tankers.
The boats equipped with the Cat engines are scheduled to come into operation under the Milford Haven Port Authority in 2016.
