Concordia captain could face 26 years
In the ongoing Italian trial of Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino, a prosecutor has recommended that the Italian court imprison the defendant to more than 26 years for his part in the 2012 cruise ship grounding which caused 32 deaths.
Schettino was in command of the vessel when it hit rocks off the island of Giglio in Tuscany.
The prosecutor, Maria Navarro broke down the suggested sentence into 14 years for the deaths and injuries Schettino caused, nine for causing the shipwreck itself, three for abandoning the ship too early and finally another three months for lying to the authorities.
Meanwhile, Tuscany and the Island of Giglio are suing Costa Cruises for 220 million Euros in damages due to the impact of the disaster on local tourism.
The salvage of the vessel was carried out by Titan Salvage (a subsidiary of Crowley Maritime), in partnership with Italian marine contractor Micoperi.
