Costa Concordia human remains
Following the successful salvage operation of the Costa Concordia cruise liner in July, Italian authorities have reported that the ill fated liner may now have given up its final secret.
Divers working on the pre-scrapping operations at Genoa have found human bones, believed to belong to the last person still unaccounted for of the 32 victims of the disaster.
Russel Rebello was an Indian citizen, working as a waiter on board when tragedy struck the liner. However, human remains were also recovered from the vessel last October, a year and a half after the foundering in January 2012, but they were incomplete. These remains were attributed to Maria Grazia Trecarichi at the time, but authorities have suggested there is the possibility that these final bones, discovered earlier this week could equally belong to Trecarichi.
The families of both victims have been informed of this latest discovery and authorities are making further attempts to arrive at a more accurate identification.
Costa Concordia foundered back in January 2012 with 4,252 people on board after capsizing and then sinking in front of the harbour of the island of Giglio, Italy. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is on trial accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship, which he denies.
