Damen contracts
Following a six year acquisition programme, the Government of the Bahamas, has signed a letter of intent with Damen to acquire nine vessels for the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and construction work for their naval bases.
Damen will be partnering with dredging company, Van Oord, for the project which includes the acquisitions of a fleet of various vessels types and the upgrading and construction of three bases in the Bahamas. Additional dredging works will be carried out to facilitate the new long range patrol craft.
The fleet of vessels includes a ro-ro landing craft (Stan Lander 5612), which will be fitted with a 25 tonne crane and demountable disaster relief equipment. In addition, eight patrol vessels, four of the Damen Stand Patrol 4207 type and another four of the Stan Patrol 3007 type, will join the Bahamas’ fleet.
Elsewhere, Damen will supply two new ASD 2810 tugs with state of the art FiFi 1 firefighting capabilities to Dutch towage and salvage specialist, Multraship. The tugs, to be named Multratug 26 and Multratug 27, are being built in Romania for delivery in June/July 2013.
Leendert Muller, managing director, Multraship, said: “The new tugs will be mostly engaged in harbour towage activities in the Zeeland Seaports and Antwerp areas. In addition to their primary duties, they will also be on standby, ready to respond in the event of fire- or explosion-related emergencies in the western and central part of the River Scheldt, as part of a February 2013 commitment entered into with the Zeeland Safety Region to keep two FiFi 1 tugs on standby.”
