Damen lands multi-million Bahamas deal
Damen Shipyards has confirmed it has clinched a contract with the Bahamas Ministry of National Security to supply it with several workboats to help mitigate illegal human migration and police against poachers.
The US$149m contract includes four Stan Patrol 4207 and four type SPa 3007 vessels. It will also include nine rigid inflatable boats and one ro-ro landing craft – a Damen Stan Lander 5617.
Bahamas Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon Dr Bernard Nottage, said that the vessels will introduce a “new paradigm” into the country’s defence force.
“The acquisition of these ships will place our country in a position to effectively police our waters with respect to minimising the extent to which poachers take advantage of our marine life and marine resources to the detriment of our fishermen,” he said.
Minister Nottage said these vessels were chosen due to their reputation in navies and coast guards of countries such as Barbados, the US and the Netherlands.
In addition to the acquisition of these ships, the contract with Damen Shipyards include the upgrade of two Bahama class vehicles and the establishment of training facilities and the acquisition of a Bridge Simulator.
Furthermore, the Government executed a contract for US$75m port infrastructural works at Coral Harbour (New Providence), Gun Point (Ragged Island) and Mathew Town (Great Inagua).
Damen will team up with international dredging contactor, Van Oord, to execute the civil works and some will be subcontracted to local partners.
