Damen Rescue Gear Ship for DMS Maritime
As part of an 11 vessel order for Sydney based DMS Maritime Pty Limited, Dutch shipbuilder, Damen, is building a Rescue Gear Ship for the Royal Australian Navy’s submarine fleet.
The two companies signed the contract for the RGS 9316 last month. The vessel, which will be built at Damen’s shipyard in Vietnam, is due to be delivered in 2016 to DMS Maritime which is part of the international service company, Serco.
Under the Fleet Marine Services contract for the Royal Australian Navy, DMS operated a fleet of around 75 vessels on the navy’s behalf. The design for the RGS has been based on a similar vessel, the SD Victoria, which was built for Serco UK supporting the Royal Navy.
Since 2011, DMS Maritime has ordered five tugboats, a Stan Tug 1606 for Rockingham, Darwin and Sydney and four water fuel lighters from Damen. Four of the five tugs have been successfully delivered and an ASD Tug is expected to be delivered mid 2013.
In addition, a contract for an Escape Gear ship 8316 submarine rescue vessels was signed in August and is expected to be delivered in 2015.
Damen is also responsible for carrying out the initial training and introduction to service for all 11 vessels.
