Damen wins prize for ‘green’ tug
Damen Shipyards Group has won third prize at a competition for the Top 100 Dutch ‘green’ companies for its ASD Tug 2810 Hybrid.
Damen’s hybrid vessel, which was honoured by the judges with the term ‘Dutch pride’, has a diesel-direct, a diesel-electric, and a battery powered propulsion system.
This gives the captain the option to choose which type of propulsion is best suited for the situation at hand, resulting in 10% less fuel consumption and 20% to 60% lower emissions, depending on how the vessel is used.
The battery system allows the vessel’s engines to be turned off while continuing to maintain its position, manoeuvring and sailing without a tow.
LED lighting and a special paint coating also make the vessel more environmentally friendly for at least five years.
In addition, a set of solar panels is used for emergency power of 23V consumers (lighting, radio etc) and the engine starting system.
The first ASD 2810 tugs are currently being built at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania. The first vessel will be delivered to launching customer, Iskes Towage & Salvage.
The competition was run by the Netherlands’ largest newspaper, De Telegraaf.
