Deeper channels at Thyboron

Located on the western shores of Jutland, Thyboron is a busy port for fishing boats and lately has been developed for wind farm activities. After the responsibility for the dredging of the channel was handed to the Port of Thyboron in 2019, the port submitted an application to the Danish Coastal Authority for an environmental permit to deepen the entrance to the Port.

“The Port of Thyboron is growing, and so are our customers’ vessels. Consequently, there is a clear need for more water depth at the entrance to the port and in the Thyboron Kanal which links Limfjorden with the North Sea,” the port officials have said. “The 8 metres guaranteed by the Danish state will soon not be deep enough. Ten years is a long time to wait to be able to keep pace with developments and increase capacity at the harbour entrance. Therefore, as a port, we decided to work towards being able to make the investment ourselves.” port officials commented.

It is planned to increase the depth in the entrance channel from 8 to 10 metres and the port has said that this is a big investment for the port. This means that the port has had to look carefully at the possibilities for using the material which will be removed when the channel is deepened. With the port anticipating a growth in the freight activity at the port there is a need to expand the facilities and so it is planned to use the dredged spoil to expand Sydhavnen which lies to the south of the existing port.

This preparation work will extend into the middle of 2021 and as the dredging work cannot take place in May and June for environmental reasons the actual dredging is expected to start in late summer 2021. By the end of 2021, the port expects to have a 10-metre-deep channel all the way into the Port of Thyboron, and all the way down to Sydhavnen.
