Disabled Access Improves
The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) in the UK has published research showing the shipping industry has responded to its guidance on improving the accessibility of passenger ships, ferries and ports for disabled people. The guidance issued in 2000 expanded on that issued earlier by the IMO.
The object of PEARL is to develop a port environmental data management system platform which will ‘fuse’ environmental monitoring data gathered from local and satellite-borne sources and allow interested parties to access a wide range of port related environmental information from one central source.
However, disabled passengers still encounter barriers at terminals and on board vessels, which could be overcome if the guidance was followed more closely. The research review can be found at www. dptac. gov. uk/index. htm
