Eco Marine Power enters into solar collaboration
Japans Eco Marine Power (EMP), the specialist in renewable and hybrid marine power, has entered into a collaboration with Italy’s Solbian Energie Alternative to develop future solar technology for marine applications.
Initially the collaboration will be centred around incorporating Solbian’s solar panel technology into EMP’s EnergySail – the rigid sail that is able tap into the power of the wind and sun.
But then testing will be rolled out later this year to include sea trials for the new EnergySail and the application of Solbian technology to EMP’s other projects including the AquariusUSV and Aquarius Eco Ship.
The Solbian solar panel is a light and flexible photovoltaic (PV) module particularly suited to marine and sustainable applications.
The modules are made from lightweight polymer films instead of traditional glass, which have a high resistance to weathering and a certification to IEC 61215 and 61730. This helps guarantee long life, even under the most extreme conditions, such as on racing yachts where Solbian technology was applied as a marine application for the very first time.
EMP says that the collaboration will lead to innovative solutions which will help reduce noxious gas emissions and reduce fuel costs for a wide variety of vessels across the commercial and leisure sectors.
