Halyard exhausts for Alicat

The UK’s marine exhaust specialist, Halyard, has designed, built and installed a full exhaust silencer system for Alicat Workboats’ four new windfarm support vessels (WFSVs).

Alicat Workboats is constructing the four vessels for UK energy supplier, E.ON.

Under the contract, Halyard designed an exhaust system to significantly reduce all sound and internal reverberation from engine to transom, which is known to cause sea sickness and discomfort for those working long hours onboard.

Andrew Davies, sales director, Halyard (M&I) Limited, told Maritime Journal: “We developed these systems at the request of Alicat. The brief was to provide a solution with excellent noise attenuation and comfort to all onboard, with a reliable exhaust system performance suitable for all weather conditions. The Dual Chamber silencer designed and installed ensured this.”

Halyard’s exhaust system has been fitted to each of the workboats’ MAN V12 engines using stainless steel risers and Dual Chamber composite silencers, to effectively eject cooling water and exhaust gases, whilst silencing the engine’s combustion noise.

The first vessel is due to serve E.ON’s Robin Rigg windfarm off the Solway Firth near Cumbria later this year.

Halyard will be showcasing exhaust components suitable for commercial craft up to 70m, including offshore WFSVs, at this year’s Seawork International. Visit them on stand B27.
