Hamburg Boxes Up
The Port of Hamburg has reported impressive first halffigures showing container handling up by 14.3% to 4.8m TEU and the total volumeof cargo handled up by 5% at 69.5m tons. Container handling at the Port hasmore than doubled since the most recent fairway deepening in the Lower Elbe in1999. The Port believes it is on track for a record breaking transhipmentvolume of 140m tons by the end of the year, with container handling expected toreach 9.8m TEU.
Customers are opting for benefits such as shorter check-in times than at airports, taking as much luggage as they can fit in their cars without extra charge, and relaxation on board modern, luxurious cruise-style ferries.
