Integrated Bridge Systems Vol 1 – Radar and AIS

As from 2008, all new marine radars must be able to display AIS data and plenty of work has been done to help ensure that the information is consistent, uniform symbols are used and there are protocols to provide a standard resolution of AIS, radar and chart images.

This is the first book in a new series to address the subject of systems integration on board ships. In

Integrated Bridge Systems

, Dr Andy Norris looks at radar technology and the way it is moving into the future. He describes New Technology (NT) Radar Systems and defines AIS as a relatively new system which is now being fully integrated into the radar display so that information can be used more effectively by the officer of the watch.

Having examined these systems, the author then examines the use of radar and AIS and how radar, electronic chart data and AIS can interact now they can be integrated. It also examines the benefits and drawbacks of electronic flexibility.

This book stresses the need for training in the use of AIS and urges the adoption of AIS elements in the standard radar, ARPA and ENS courses.

Written in a clear and concise style, the author demonstrates how user requirements and modern technology can be brought together to enhance situational awareness.

Dr Andy Norris graduated in 1970 with a degree in electronics and since then has been involved in the design of navigational equipment for a variety of applications. After joining Kelvin Hughes as Technical Director in 1990 he has concentrated on navigation systems for merchant ships. In 1998 he set up ChartCo Ltd, which distributes maritime data, including chart updates and weather forecasts through a dedicated satellite communications link directly to ships at sea. He is Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Royal Institute of Navigation and also a member of its Council.
