Iridium offer
US based satellite communications company, Iridium Communications Inc, has been nominated as a provider of Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS).
The submission from the United States will be put forward for technical study and considered at the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meeting, taking place in London this month.
“Our systems will demonstrate to the maritime community that we can support ship to shore voice communications, ship to shore data communications and ship to shore broadcast capabilities,” Brian Pemberton, director of aviation and maritime products, Iridium, told Maritime Journal.
Iridium GMDSS provision will increase coverage to underserved areas (Sea area A4) and redundancy and reliability.
The company says its GMDSS offering is being made in response to strong and growing feedback from customers.
“We can offer the maritime industry full global coverage, providing GDMSS capabilities in regions like the North Pole, where communications needed to implement a search and rescue plan need to be improved,” Mr Pemberton added.
The GDMSS is the international radio safety system mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1999 for ships at sea to automate and improve emergency communications for the world’s shipping industry.
