Koper begins dredging work
Slovenia’s Port of Koper has begun dredging operations to deepen Basin I in a bid to enhance its competitiveness.
Dredging work is being carried out by Italy’s Costruzioni Generali Xodo using San Luca Primo. The first state of deepening the harbour waters, which is due to be completed by the end of 21 February, will increase the depth of the container terminal to 13m.
In addition, necessary works for the construction and filling of the silt disposal sites are also underway.
These works are part of the company’s plan to extend Pier I, which will increase the annual capacity of its container terminal by an additional 230,000 teu to 980,000 teu per annum.
Further to seabed dredging, the project includes the construction of an additional 100m of operation quayside and associated infrastructure, machinery and equipment.
The total cost of the project is an estimated €78m and is due for completion in 2018.
