This book is aimed at people studying for certificates of competency and for the practising engineer working at sea and deals with the crosshead engines available to the marine industry since the beginning of the century.
Dr Denis Griffiths served as a seagoing engineer officer and he turned to teaching after obtaining a degree in mechanical engineering. As a senior lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University he taught and developed a number of marine engineering courses and has been involved in research, external examining and consultancy activities – all involving marine propulsion. Having previously served on the IMarEST Council Dr Griffiths has been a member of the Institute’s Technical Committee.
The term ‘low speed’ is not exact but in marine terms it is generally accepted as an engine operating at a speed below about 200 revolutions per minute. Low speed engines are invariably of the crosshead type and operate on the two-stroke cycle. There are essentially two separate sections to any marine diesel engine, the cylinder in which power is developed and the crankcase where reciprocating power is developed by the piston is translated into rotary power at the crankshaft.
