Marine overhaul
Irish Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has had his reorganisation of maritime safety and marine emergency services approved by cabinet.
The plan will combine the Irish Coast Guard (ICG) and Marine Safety Office (MSO) to establish a new body, the Irish Maritime Administration (IMA), which will direct the ICG and MSO.
The ICG’s main responsibility is to provide e emergency response to incidents on water, with the MSO monitoring safety standards onboard vessels and in ports.
The IMA is now expected to draft a new marine safety strategy and must improve Ireland’s preparation for major oil spill incidents.
