Maritime training
Maritime and Engineering College North West (MECNW) is launching an ambitious new training initiative to arm hundreds of unemployed people with skills to secure long-term jobs.
The Birkenhead UK based college has formed a partnership with Jobcentre Plus to roll out a series of maritime focused ‘Employability’ courses. The courses are due to begin this month, focused on ramping up skills with NVQ level qualifications in areas including customer services, welding and port operations.
Mersey Maritime Group chief executive Jim Teasdale, who runs the college, said the scheme will target areas of skills shortages across the maritime sector. He said courses are scheduled to run every ten weeks and will be open to unemployed people, from the age of 19, across Merseyside.
Courses will last up to 12 weeks, involving 16 hours of study per week, meaning that participants’ benefits will be protected.
