MoD contract for Silvers Marine

In the UK, Argyll and Bute firm Silvers Marine has won a new five-year contract with Babcock International entailing Silvers Boatyard servicing and maintaining a fleet of vessels for the Ministry of Defence.

GSS have undertaken an intensive programme of improvement of facilities and staff training at the yard

In April Silvers and its boatyard was bought by GSS (Plant) Ltd – an organisation operating a fleet of multi role vessels and anchor handling tugs internationally. All Silvers staff were re-employed and GSS has now moved its head office and associated staff from nearby Rhu Marina. The owners of GSS have undertaken an intensive programme of improvement of facilities and staff training at the yard as well as providing new employment opportunities in a rural area of high unemployment in the 16 – 24 age group.

Silvers’ general manager Andrew Malcolm told Maritime Journal: “I have been working on this since December last year as part of the tendering process – after many discussions and site visits this comes as excellent news.”
