Mustang supports Antarctica expedition

The company wants to show its support for ‘The Coldest Journey’ Antarctica challenge. The challenge is looking to raise $10m for Seeing is Believing, a global initiative to help tackle avoidable blindness.

The vessel involved with the 2,000 mile expedition, SA Agulhus II, was built by STX Finland to replace the SA Agulhus after over 30 years in service. The vessel is used to support three South African research bases on Marion Island, Gough Island and the Antarctic base SANAE IV, where biological, environmental and climate change research will be carried out.

During the expedition, explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, will lead a six-man team of explorers across Antarctica, the first time it has ever been done in winter.

Following ice trials to test and analyse the ice loading on the hull and propulsion, the 6,000 tonne South African vessel set off from London on 6 December 2012 and is due to arrive back in Britain in early 2014.

Mustang Marine has previously supported work in the Antarctic’s harsh conditions by designing and supplying vessels which are currently used for surveying, crew training and ship-to-shore transfer of crew personnel out there.
